Sophie is an experienced advocate who specialises in all areas of criminal law, regulatory proceedings, inquests and inquiries.
She is regularly briefed in complex indictable matters including homicide, serious drug offences, historical sexual offences, white collar fraud and corporate crime. Sophie also has experience in advising on, defending and prosecuting regulatory cases, including in ASIC and WorkSafe matters.
Sophie has appeared as junior counsel in complex and serious indictable criminal trials, pleas and appeals including DPP v Jacob Elliott [2022] VSC 554; The State of Western Australian v Terence Kelly (IND 96 of 2022) and DPP v Merryfull & Bloomfield [2023] VSCA 244.
Prior to joining the bar, Sophie worked in private practice as an advocate in a broad range of matters. As a criminal defence solicitor at Doogue + George, she developed comprehensive litigation skills in indictable crime as well as Royal Commissions (including assisting interstate clients in the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses into Child Sexual Abuse), coronial inquiries, coercive hearings and professional disciplinary matters. Immediately prior to signing the Bar roll, Sophie was an associate to his Honour Judge Michael O’Connell SC at the County Court of Victoria.
